BFM/1 is an industrial electrical converter, USB to RS422 serial standard, 5 V-self-powered via Type A USB port.
On the PC, the USB device is seen as a RS232 port (VCP, Virtual COM Port), and it does not need any DIP switch. This USB-RS485 serial converter is Full Duplex and it automatically detects the transmission data rate up to 250 kbps, so it can be easily installed in any new or existing network.
The Operating System should automatically detect the device and install the necessary drivers, which can also be downloaded here.

USB converters are typically used to allow the communication of a PC with a RS422 network, or to increase the transmission distance. In a wide RS422 bus, like an industrial environment or a solar power system, it is recommended to use an isolated converter, in order to protect against voltage surges. In a heavily disturbed network, such as industrial environment, it is good practice to integrate two or more optical-electrical converter to guarantee signal integrity. Furthermore, there are environments where electrical devices are strictly forbidden, such as pools, saunas, fire-risk buildings, so optical fiber is mandatory.
USB-serial converters are available also with isolation, with different combinations of serial standard, or with other connectors. BFC/1 converter for example uses 5-pins Mini XLR, with non-isolated RS422. BTS/1 and BTV/1 come with synthetic or glass optical fiber, to isolate against electromagnetic interferences. Industrial serial converters BMM/1 and BMC/1 work with RS485 serial standard, with screw terminals or 3-pins Mini XLR connector. Every combination of serial standard, optical fiber, and power supply, is however available, while special requests (such as higher data rates) can be made via the contact form.
