Optical-electrical converters are typically used to integrate a section of optical fiber in a RS485 low voltage network, in order to increase the transmission distance. They isolate the different branches of a network from electromagnetical interferences (EMI) and voltage surges, like the different floors of a hotel, or various branches of a solar power system. Electromagnetical interferences are fairly common in these environments, so it is good practice to integrate two or more optical-electrical converter to guarantee signal integrity.
