RSC\/9R is an industrial electrical converter, RS232 to RS485 serial standard, self-powered via DB9 connector. It can be used to allow PC or industrial machinery to communicate with a RS485 network, from DB9 connector with set screws to 3-pins Mini XLR connector. The device is completely Plug&Play, since it does not need any driver nor DIP switch. RS232 serial is Full Duplex, while RS485 is Half Duplex, with software controlled data direction, RTS (Request To Send). Serial converters are typically used to communicate with old devices and machinery using RS232, and integrate them in a RS485 low voltage network. RS232 serial standard is still common for industrial appliances, but it has limited transmission range and it is vulnerable to electromagnetical noise. Electromagnetical interferences (EMI) are fairly common in industrial environments, so it is good practice not to use RS232 for serial communication to guarantee signal integrity. In case of heavy electromagnetical interferences, a section of optical fiber is recommended. RS232-RS485 converters are available also with isolation, with different combinations of serial standard, or with other connectors. RMC\/9R<\/a> converter for example is functionally identical to RSC\/9R, but data direction is automatically detected. IMC\/9R<\/a> and ISC\/9R<\/a> come with an isolated RS485, in case it was necessary, with automatic data direction or RTS, respectively. Industrial serial converters DFP\/9S<\/a> and DFP\/9A<\/a> have synthetic optical fiber outputs, with screw connectors, in order to electrically isolate the appliance.
