PRMP\/1 is an industrial converter, from RS232 serial standard to RS485, powered by mains voltage 230 V supply. It can be used to allow the communication of devices using two different serial standards, or to increase the transmission distance of a serial communication. Thanks to its compact 2-module DIN rail housing, it can be easily mounted in an electrical panel. Serial converters are typically used to communicate with old devices and machinery using RS232, and integrate them in a RS485 low voltage network. RS232 serial standard is still common for industrial appliances, but it has limited transmission range and it is vulnerable to electromagnetical noise. Electromagnetical interferences (EMI) are fairly common in industrial environments, so it is good practice not to use RS232 for serial communication to guarantee signal integrity. In case of heavy electromagnetical interferences, a section of optical fiber is recommended. RS232-RS485 converters are available with 400 V or 560 V isolation, powered by AC and DC low voltage, or with DB9 RS232 connector. PRLP\/1<\/a> converter for example comes with an isolated RS485 to protect against voltage surges. IMC\/9R<\/a> (isolated) and RMC\/9R<\/a> are smaller and ideal for direct connection to a device with a DB9 connector. Industrial serial converter PRM\/1<\/a> is functionally identical to PRMP\/1, but it is powered by AC and DC low voltage, like PRL\/1<\/a>, which in turn is isolated.
