PRLP\/1 is an industrial converter, from RS232 serial standard to 560 V-isolated RS485, powered by mains voltage 230 V supply. It can be used to allow the communication of devices using two different serial standards, or to isolate two sections of a heavily disturbed serial communication. Thanks to its compact 2-module DIN rail housing, it can be easily mounted in an electrical panel. It accepts the standard 230 V mains voltage, and it is completely Plug&Play, since it does not need any driver nor DIP switch. RS232 serial is Full Duplex, while the 560 V-isolated RS485 is Half Duplex. Serial converters are typically used to communicate with old devices and machinery using RS232, and integrate them in a RS485 low voltage network. RS232 serial standard is still common for industrial appliances, but it has limited transmission range and it is vulnerable to electromagnetical noise. Electromagnetical interferences (EMI) are fairly common in industrial environments, so it is good practice not to use RS232 for serial communication to guarantee signal integrity. In case of heavy electromagnetical interferences, a section of optical fiber is recommended. RS232-RS485 converters are available also without isolation, powered by AC and DC low voltage, or with DB9 RS232 connector. PRMP\/1<\/a> converter for example comes with a non-isolated RS485, in case it was not necessary. IMC\/9R<\/a> (isolated) and RMC\/9R<\/a> are smaller and ideal for direct connection to a device with a DB9 connector. Industrial serial converter PRL\/1<\/a> is functionally identical to PRLP\/1, but it is powered by AC and DC low voltage, like PRM\/1<\/a>, which in turn is not isolated.
