Description

POF/2 is a multi-mode dual channel synthetic optical fiber, with 1.0/2.2 mm core/cladding diameter. Optical fiber is mainly used in industrial environment, to grant electromagnetical interference immunity and electrical isolation. It can easily guarantee the common transmission speed required by industrial serial standards, up to 250 kbps. Usually the focus of RS485, RS232, RS422 is not high transmission speed, but stability and consistency. Electromagnetical interferences are fairly common in industrial environments, so it is good practice to integrate two or more optical-electrical converters to guarantee signal integrity. Furthermore, there are environments where electrical devices are strictly forbidden, such as pools, saunas, fire-risk buildings, so optical fiber is mandatory.

If additional protection is necessary, dual channel synthetic optical fiber POF/2HD is available, which is armored against rodents. The external anti-rodent armor might be necessary in case of outdoor installation, or environments where rats or rodents in general might be present. In case of critical applications, in which communication cannot be interrupted, it is good practice to use an optical fiber with protection against accidents. The thick armor grants additional protection also against objects that might fall onto the fiber and damage it.

Single-mode or multi-mode

Single-mode optical fibers are used in high speed applications, up to several Gbps, but they have some disadvantages with respect to multi-mode fibers. For instance, they don’t allow small curvature radius, require precise installation, and are expensive. A multi-mode fiber, on the other hand, can reach a lower transmission speed, but it is cheaper and flexible from an installation standpoint. For example, installation requires just simple tools, and converters use convenient screw connectors, which can be tightened by hand. However, in order to reduce insertion loss and guarantee higher quality communication, some precautions can be taken.

Use cases

Dual channel synthetic optical fiber POF/2 can be paired with optical-electrical converters and repeaters like CMM/1S and TSS/1M, suitable for RS485 communication. These converters are for DIN rail mounting, as CRM/1S and TSS/1F, which in turn use RS232 and RS422. For PC connection via USB or DB9 connector, BTS/1 and DFP/9S are suggested, respectively. Every combination of serial standard, optical fiber, and power supply, is however available, while special requests (such as higher data rates) can be made via the contact form.
